D. Bavdek: Phoenix - new work

D. Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93

After a new work, Phoenix, by Dušan Bavdek, we will hear the one-movement Violin Concerto by Aleksandr Konstantinovich Glazunov. The creative work of this pupil of Rimsky Korsakov, whose balanced opus earned him the label of the ‘Russian Brahms’, is largely based on the tradition of the Russian Five. The concerto was premiered at a concert of the Russian Music Society in St Petersburg by Leopold Auer, to whom the work is dedicated.
Referring to Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, a work the composer labelled as an ‘optimistic tragedy’, Aram Khachaturian wrote: “This is a genuine symphony, a declarative work with philosophical content and full of powerful emotions. The four parts of the symphony contain a diverse spectrum of images – joyous, tragic and sorrowful – but in the end lyricism prevails. In this new work the composer creates dramatically contrasting images, which are surprisingly convincing and attract the attention of the public with their beauty and depth.”
