Ernest Chausson’s only Symphony is thematically and formally constructed after the model of Franck. Thus it is not surprising that it was first performed in Paris (in 1891) at a concert organised by Franck’s music society, Société national de musique.
Strauss’s youthful work, the popular Horn Concerto No. 1 in B-flat major, from 1882, entirely reflects the romantic tradition. The composer’s father was a highly regarded soloist on this instrument, thus the solo part is written so as to make optimum use of the colour of the horn, with an emphasis on virtuosity.
At the end we will hear six movements from the Turandot Suite, Op. 41 (BV 248) by Ferruccio Busoni written in 1904-5, based on Carlo Gozzi's play Turandot.
