This programme is divided into two parts – in the first part there is an emphasis on sacred music while the second focuses more on secular music. Although the border between sacred and secular music is sometimes difficult to draw precisely, the text does, of course, provide a clear boundary stone.
The second half of the programme contains a number of texts by none other than William Shakespeare.
The programme is dual faceted and contrasting, not only in character but also in terms of the selection of composers and in the bipartite and contrasting nature of their compositions.
On the one hand, there are well known Swedish composers: one expressive, the second romantic and the third more melodic, full of harmony…
On the other hand, there are the no less known Frenchman Poulenc and the Englishman Williams.
The Frenchman with a sacred composition that is dramatic, highly emotional and expressive, while Williams’s music is part of the English choral tradition, often based on folklore.
