B.-A. Zimmermann: Oboe Concerto
G. Mahler: Symphony No. 6 in A minor, "Tragic"
_________

The German composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann once described his artistic personality as being "an apparent mix of the monastic and the Dionysian". With regard to his Oboe Concerto he said that it is a work that represents "a horror for super-orthodox dodecaphonists".
In a letter to Richard Specht, Gustav Mahler wrote of his Sixth Symphony that "it will pose a riddle that only a generation that has absorbed and genuinely ‘digested’ the first five symphonies will be capable of untangling". Particularly enthusiastic about the composition were Schoenberg and Berg, the latter of whom in a letter to Anton Webern labelled it as "the one and only Sixth, notwithstanding the Pastoral".
