Marc-André Dalbavie continues the mission of Gérard Grisey and Tristan Murail, primarily composing “spectral music”. The title of his composition, written in 2002 on a commission from Orchestre de Paris, is therefore of no surprise – Color.
In his Fifth Symphony, Mahler declaratively liberated his music from extra-musical (programme) content. Nonetheless, in this the composer’s best known and most popular symphony one has the impression that it could at the same time be both Hanslick’s abstract play of sound and Schopenhauer’s expression of the unavoidable presence of the great human ideas. Herbert von Karajan once said that on hearing this symphony “you forget that time has passed. A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience. The fantastic finale almost forces you to hold your breath.”
